VISIBILITY - THE FACE OF THE DEVELOPING WORLD'S RESEARCHERS ON THE INTERNET

A Platform for the Communication of Science, Research & All Fields of Study between the Scientists and Researchers of the Developing and Developed Worlds

Welcome to a brand new part of Mangosteen's website.

Today, on the internet the scientists of the Developing World are mostly invisible!
In most cases, out of sight and out of mind to the Developed World and other Developing Regions.  They're there, and their active, doing a lot of important work, but we just can't see them!

Only very few researchers in the world's Developing and Least Developed Countries have a profile of their professional activities on the web.
Their contact details and email addresses are often almost impossible to locate.
Many universities and research institutions too lack effective websites.

Mangosteen aims to go some way to correcting what is a very obvious problem by establishing Visibility.
Visibility aims to make the researchers and scientists of the Developing World a little more ... visible!
Hence easier to contact, to get to know and to network and collaborate with.  No one in science can work successfully in isolation, the community relies on each other, and effective communications are everything.

Science and scientific researchers are just the beginning - we believe that Visibility's approach is equally applicable to all fields of study - everything from theoretical physics and synthetic chemistry to economics, law and archaeology.

Here Developing World researchers are invited to:

Create your own Individual Website - upload your contact details, research interests, details about your institution etc.  Build your own profile on the internet, absolutely free of charge.

Join the Visibility Forum - Network with researchers from around the world.  Ask questions, get answers, request or offer assistance, build relationships and collaborations.  You name it, if it happens in science and research we aim to give it a place in the Forum.

Write a Blog - write about any aspect of your professional activities - daily, weekly or whenever you have time.  Tell your story to the world!  An online diary of what you want people to know about the work you are doing.

The Directory - Add your details and that of your university, company or organization, academic publications, conferences and anything else that might be of interest to the Visibility Directory.  We intend that this will become the most comprehensive up to date resource for science and research in the Developing World on the internet (or in print!).  It's a Directory for people who are committed to doing good work and eager to communicate with their colleagues with similar interest across the globe - we believe that it's the beginning of a very important and potentially extremely powerful document.  But it's nothing without your input!

The Document Library - Upload and store document files of that you believe will be of interest to other members of the site, on any topic pertaining to the scope of Visibility.  (Sorry, no copyrighted material - these can be brought to the attention of other by adding an appropriate link to an entry in the Directory.)

Events Calendar - List forthcoming conferences, workshops and other events of general interest to the community.

And more, the features listed here are just for starters - Visibility is currently under construction and only the essential elements are in place.  The site will be regularly updated over the coming months, with new features added.  If there's a feature that you would like to see added please just let us know - we'll do our best to help you communicate more effectively with your colleagues in both the Developed and Developing worlds.  (This site is based on Joomla! - http://www.joomla.org - if Joomla! has an application that you think should be added to the site please just let us know.)

IMPORTANT - Before you start adding text to your own personal pages on this site, please don't type directly into the web browser.  Please back up your content by first writing into a file stored on your computer (ideally into an HTML editor, there are many freely available for download on the internet - or use Microsoft Word or other text editor to save the text) - and then copy and paste it into your website or blog.  This ensures that you have a backup should this website temporarily go offline for any reason, or should your internet connection drop for any reason.  Back it up to be safe!

PLEASE NOTE - This is a professional website for the exchange of information only.  We will remove any inappropriate content from the site without warning or explanation.  Please respect the site - we believe it has the potential to be an extremely valuable resource, but only provided that it is not abused and that the user generated content is of the highest quality - it's success relies on you.  So, if you believe in Visibility please also police the site and report any inappropriate content to the administrator.

Finally for now - please be patient with the site - it is new, it is undergoing testing at present and there may be problems or bugs with the way it works - it is a work in progress.  If you find an error or bug please let us know by email.

Questions and problems -

Enjoy it.  Make the most of it.  We hope it helps.
And the last word - if you like the concept behind Visibility - please spread the word!
(It couldn't be easier - the link with an envelope above will allow you to directly email this article to a friend or colleague.)

Cheers

HINARI, AGORA, OARE & TEEAL

Health InterNetwork Access to Research Initiative (HINARI)

The Health InterNetwork Access to Research Initiative (HINARI) provides free or very low cost online access to the major journals in biomedical and related social sciences to local, not-for-profit institutions in developing countries.

Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture Register (AGORA)

The AGORA program, set up by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) together with major publishers, enables developing countries to gain access to an outstanding digital library collection in the fields of food, agriculture, environmental science and related social sciences. AGORA provides a collection of 1132 journals to institutions in 107 countries. AGORA is designed to enhance the scholarship of the many thousands of students, faculty and researchers in agriculture and life sciences in the developing world.

Online Access to Research in the Environment (OARE)

Online Access to Research in the Environment (OARE), an international public-private consortium coordinated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Yale University, and leading science and technology publishers, enables developing countries to gain free access to one of the world's largest collections of environmental science literature.

The Essential Electronic Agricultural Library (TEEAL)

TEEAL was dubbed a "Library in a Box" by a researcher in Africa not only because it arrives in a box, but because it contains the same capabilities as a real-time library does - a comprehensive collection of current journals to browse or search. This library is available to over 100 eligible developing countries, and is a powerful tool for building capacity in agriculture by helping researchers, faculty, students and extension workers quickly retrieve relevant and current scientific information.

TEEAL is available on compact disc or local area network. The journal collection starts with 1993 and is updated annually (the 2005 update will be available at the close of 2006). It includes over two million pages of articles, generously provided by 60 participating publishers and index providers.
